Jackson Rodríguez's wife and son, Emelec's left-back, were kidnapped at home on Wednesday. The player has escaped unharmed and is under police protection.
“Unidentified individuals entered the player's house violently in the early hours of this morning and, in addition to stealing various objects and money, took the wife and son of the player,” said Ecuadorian police, who is trying to find out the whereabouts of Rodríguez's family.
The abduction took place in the coastal city of Guayaquil, the capital of Guayas province, one of the most affected by violence in Ecuador. The country of Latin America has been, since January last year, under a declaration of “internal armed conflict”, when President Daniel Noboa dubbed “terrorists” criminal groups, responsible for the high levels of violence and linked to drug trafficking.
Noboa was reelected on April 14 and Ecuador entered the maximum warning five days later, due to an alleged plan to murder the president, accused of committing electoral fraud in the elections.
